How biometrics work

A user provides a sample (e.g., fingerprint or eye scan) and the sample is stored in the recognition system. Multiple users have their sample stored on the system and provide a many-to one verification method. The individual user, when logging in to the system, provides another sample in a reader or scanner and that sample is compared to the library of stored samples. If it matches a sample then the user is granted access to the protected resource.

The power of Redundancy: Add a fingerprint to a Smartcard and have your system protected with a Smartcard reader and a fingerprint reader--if the sample the user provides does not match what is on the Smartcard and what is in the library access it denied!
